Common Types of Acne Lesions
Acne is a pretty common disease nowadays, especially amongst teenagers in western societies. Before you seek a treatment, it’s better to have knowledge of various types of acne so that you can know which type might be affecting you.
In initial stages, people usually suffer from non-inflammatory acne, which are either blackheads or whiteheads. Blackheads, also sometimes called open comedo, form when the skin pores are not entirely blocked. So sebum can flow to the skin surface in small quantities along with bacteria. Open comedos get black color as a result of the skin pigments rather than dirt. If left untreated, blackheads usually take several months to disappear.
On the other hand, whiteheads or closed comedos form when skin pores get blocked entirely and all the sebum gets trapped inside the skin. Whiteheads look similar to small bumps and the temptation to pop them is too much in most teens although popping them can makes things worse.
Some moderately severe forms of acne are inflammatory in nature. Firstly, we have papules, which look like tiny pink lumps. These usually form when non-inflammatory acne doesn’t get cured and is turning into an inflammatory state. Again, remember that you shouldn’t squeeze a papule or it will only get worse.
Then there are inflamed lesions known as pustules. There isn’t much difference in appearance between whiteheads and pustules, except that pustules are inflammatory and have pus inside. Pustules are whitish-yellow at the center with redness in the surroundings. Their inflammatory state is a result of the chemical reactions from the sebum trapped inside.
In all the various types of acne lesions we discussed above, the sufferers usually don’t feel much pain. However, there are some severe types like nodules and cysts that do give pain along with a bad look. Nodules are usually larger in size and mostly deep-rooted inside the skin. If bacteria-filled sebum leaks from a comedo into the surrounding areas inside the skin, it eventually results in nodules.
In cysts, however, the reactions inside the skin develop pus and the resulting lesions have a greater diameter. It is usual for both nodules and cysts to last for several months and they may even scar your face as they disappear. If you think your acne is at this stage, then visit a dermatologist without any further delay. Permanent cure may not be possible in some cases, and your dermatologist would only be able to lessen the intensity of scarring and swelling.
